Mustard Terminal

Mustard Terminal is the command line built into MustardOS. Open it from Applications and the frontend steps aside while it runs, then comes straight back to Applications when you leave.

It draws in the colours and fonts of your current theme, supports colour, full screen programs such as top, and even pictures, and comes with an on-screen keyboard so you can type with just the buttons. A keyboard plugged into your device works too.

Press MENU at any time to open its settings, shown below.

Visible Options

Terminal Font Size

How large the text is drawn, from 6 to 72 points. Smaller fits more on screen, larger is kinder on the eyes. Press Left or Right to change it.

Font Hinting

How the text is smoothed to fit the pixels of your screen. Choose from Normal, Light, Monochrome, or None. Monochrome gives crisp, hard edged letters, which can read better on small screens.

Foreground Colour

The colour of the text itself, from twelve choices including White, Amber, Green, and Cyan for that proper old terminal look.

Background Colour

The colour behind the text, from twelve dark shades such as Black, Charcoal, Navy, and Forest, all chosen to keep the text easy to read.

Reset Terminal

Starts a fresh session on a clean screen. Anything still running in the terminal is stopped, so use it when something has got itself stuck.

Quit Terminal

Closes Mustard Terminal and returns you to Applications.

Hidden Options

On-Screen Keyboard

Press SELECT to bring up the keyboard and cycle where it sits: along the bottom, along the top, each in a solid or see-through style, then hidden again. Move between keys with the D-Pad and press A to type one. L1 and R1 flip between the lower case, upper case, and control key layers.

Terminal Controls

With the keyboard hidden, the D-Pad sends arrow keys, B is Backspace, Y is Space, and START is Enter. L2 and R2 scroll back through earlier output.

Reset Settings

Press X while the settings are open to put the font and colours back to what your theme provides.

Custom Keyboard Layers

Extra keyboard layers, such as a page of symbols, can be added with a layout file whose location is stored in /opt/muos/config/terminal/osk_layout. Up to 13 extra layers are allowed, each with four rows of up to 12 keys.

Quick Tips

  • Settings are saved as soon as you close the menu with B or MENU, and apply straight away.

  • Earlier output is remembered between visits, but it lives with other temporary files, so a restart clears it.

  • As with any command line, it is very easy to change things you did not mean to. If you are following a guide, type carefully.
