Sound

Volume, and the handful of settings to reach for if the sound ever crackles, pops, or drifts out of time with what is happening on screen.

Visible Options

Volume

How loud the game is, from silent up to full, in steps of 10%.

Sample Rate

The quality setting for the sound. Auto matches whatever the game asks for and is almost always the right answer.

Audio Latency

How closely the sound follows the action. Low Latency is the tightest, Balanced is a happy middle, and Compatibility gives demanding games more breathing room so the sound does not break up.

Audio Period

How much sound is prepared in advance. Smaller keeps things responsive, larger is steadier on games that are working the device hard.

Audio Filter

An optional tone adjustment. Low-Pass softens harsh, hissy highs and High-Pass thins out heavy rumble.

Rate Control

Lets the sound be nudged very slightly faster or slower so it stays in step with the picture. A small amount is plenty, and Off disables it entirely.

Quick Tips

  • Tap MENU on any row for a short explanation of what it does, and hold MENU instead to slide the menu out of the way and watch the game behind it.

  • Hearing crackles or dropouts? Raise Audio Period or set Audio Latency to Compatibility before changing anything else. Those two fix nearly every sound problem.

  • If the sound slowly falls out of time with the picture over several minutes, a small amount of Rate Control is the setting that keeps the two together.

  • A small Audio Period is worth trying, and safe to try. If your device cannot keep up with the one you picked, MustardOS moves to a larger one for the rest of the session so the sound does not break up. Your choice is not overwritten, and picking a period again lets it have another go.
